Over the last decade many western countries have undertaken educational reforms in an effort to increase student achievement in mathematics. In New Zealand the government funded the Numeracy Development (NDP) a professional development initiated in 1999 in response to student under-achievement in the TIMSS mathematics tests. This book investigates the intentions of NDP in relation to the perspectives of eight teachers who participated in this mathematical reform programme. The teachers' perceptions of their experiences are considered in relation to the baseline intentions of NDP.The book provides a rationale for the necessity for mathematical reform in NZ schools. It details the intentions of NDP and outlines nature of the programme designed to enable participating teachers to make change. The teachers describe their perceived successes and challenges in their attempt to embed the mathematical reforms. They voice examples of their growth in knowledge and pedagogy and talk about their frustrations over lack of time to consolidate these changes. This book is written for teachers involved in professional development, researchers, facilitators and lecturers in mathematics education.

Many of the party's candidates have their own biography pages, information about others may be found here. Karl Bélanger (born 1975) is the Senior press secretary for Canada's New Democratic Party leader Jack Layton. He previously was the spokesman for former NDP Leader Alexa McDonough and has worked for the party since the 1997 federal election. Minding the Public Purse: The Fiscal Crisis, Po...

Janice MacKinnon became minister of Finance for the province of Saskatchewan in 1993, under NDP Premier Roy Romanow, just as the province became the first casualty of the debt and deficit crises that dominated both provincial and federal politics throughout the decade. Minding the Public Purse is a unique mixture of political memoir and policy analysis. An insider's account of how Saskatchewan avoided fiscal catastrophe, it reveals the dynamics of the federal-provincial finance ministers' meetings that saw the rise of Paul Martin and his radical transformation of Canada's finances. MacKinnon, Canada's first female finance minister, provides keen observations on how personalities and shared regional perspectives cut across party affiliations in the evolution of federal-provincial deliberations on managing the debt crisis. Although initially opposed to the radical cuts and downloading unilaterally imposed by the federal minister of Finance in his 1995 budget, she now argues that they were essential and analyses how they have irrevocably transformed the Canadian federation. MacKinnon provides a timely analysis of the implications of the fiscal crisis for the future of medicare and Canada's other social programs and shows why politicians must involve the Canadian public in an open and frank debate about the challenges and choices facing the nation.

In his 2001 volume on politics in Saskatchewan, Howard Leeson observed that vast changes were underway in the Saskatchewan polity, and he predicted that the familiar politics of the past would soon look jarringly antiquated. The contributors to this new volume-- Saskatchewan Politics: Crowding the Centre --come to the conclusion that this process of change is now largely complete. As its subtitle makes clear, this new study suggests that political parties in the province have crowded closer and closer to the ideological centre. Without the fulcrum of ideological division, politics in the province appears to be more and more about personal and administrative clashes and less and less about substantive differences as to how the economy and society should be organized. In short, left and right are increasingly being left out of provincial politics. Includes a dvd of the 2006-08 Throne and budget debates between NDP leader Lorne Calvert and Saskatchewan Party leader Brad Wall.

The Top Secret Conservative Handbook

We don't have to ask whether Stephen Harper's Conservatives have a top secret manual for controlling parliament because that scandal broke years ago, unfortunately they've never released it (or anything else for that matter). Thankfully we've been able to reverse engineer the various 'White Papers' they're using to ruin things from what they've said, done, bragged about, and lorded over us. And to help you become the Ultimate Insider we've included earlier drafts and footnotes giving even more insight into the fluid state of the very modern Canadian Conservative. Now you too can know more than you should about: 'The In & Out Scandal'; 'Inserting your Member in Parliament'; and why no matter how popular Mulcair becomes, 'The Enemy of My Enemy is My NDP'. Then you'll be ready to sing along next year, when we present: THE TOP SECRET CONSERVATIVE HANDBOOK - THE MUSICAL! * * Musical subject to Parliamentary approval

The only book written by Jack Layton (1950-2011) on his political life and vision, this is the former NDP leader's passionate call to action and will inspire all Canadians to embrace a better future. On August 22, 2011, Jack Layton, Official Opposition Leader, died as he lived, with dignity, bestowing to his country a message of hope. Canada was in mourning and within hours of his death, tens of thousands of Canadians -- from NDP supporters to political opponents -- paid tribute to the man and his legacy through public vigils, memorials, and expressions of grief. Originally published in 2006, Speaking Out Louder represents Layton's 'blueprint for Canada' Highly acclaimed and powerfully written, this book captures Jack Layton's political vision and exemplifies the optimism that marked his life's work. In it he shares personal stories and fascinating, behind-the-scenes details of his career in national politics and talks about the big issues (poverty, AIDS and healthcare, childcare, housing, education) and the ideas that work for Canadians.
